Evenstitch Atelier

Our story begins with a single stitch.

From a Brooklyn garment studio to a global teaching atelier, Evenstitch Atelier exists to help makers paint boldly and wear their story.

How it started

The atelier began as a small Brooklyn garment studio focused on hand-painted textiles. Founder Mara Ellison experimented with even applications of color on cotton and linen, often using vellum templates to keep lines clean. Over the years the studio grew into a structured teaching space that values thimble guidance, patient practice, and personal style.

Our mission

We develop clear, structured lessons for both beginners and experienced makers. Every course emphasizes responsible material use and the quiet satisfaction of seeing a finished painted garment that tells its own story.

By sharing the same techniques we refined in our own studio we invite participants to discover how even the smallest stitch decisions can transform an ordinary T-shirt into wearable art.

Three advantages that guide our teaching

Clarity first

Step-by-step instruction removes guesswork so each participant moves confidently from sketch to finished garment.

Responsible practice

We teach proper preparation of fabrics, safe pigment handling, and mindful use of tools including vellum and thimble.

Lasting personal style

Lessons help makers develop a visual language that remains unique while honoring the traditions of fine stitch work.
